A SERIOUS ACCIDENT

(From our own Correspondent.)

21st April 1860

On Sunday week as the Rev. John Gow, Presbyterian minister, was coming up to hold services at the kirk on the Caledonian Hill, when nearly opposite Mr. Cochrane's dairy, and where the water from the Mines Royal and Red Hill Companies crosses the track, his horse, by putting his fore foot into a deep hole which could not be seen, having been filled by the sludge, stumbled and threw the rev. gentleman with great force on the ground.

Luckily parties were near at hand, and seeing the occurrence ran to his aid; on their arrival they took him up quite senseless; he was conveyed to a neighboring tent. Dr. Saenger had been seen passing a few minutes before, and one man took Mr Gow's horse and went in quest of him, and in a short time the doctor arrived, when the sufferer appeared to revive, but when he spoke he had lost all recollection, but knew those around him. He received a very bad wound of more than two inches slant ways over the left eye, and several bruises all over the face. Late in the day he was conveyed home, and came gradually to his recollection on the way; he complained of great pain in his right arm.

It is sickening to write on bad roads, or more properly speaking no roads. This case is only one out of the many that have taken place here of late, but this is the nearest where a life was endangered; had the unfortunate gentleman been far from any habitations there is no doubt, it being a cold day, that he would not have regained his senses.

I suppose loss of life must take place before anything will be done to improve our roads, such as they are, and I cannot make it out why Mr. Taylor, District Surveyor, will not have a proposed road proclaimed; this done, the inhabitants themselves would make the bad and dangerous places passable. I expect the next time the business license meeting will take place a scene will ensue. Several of the storekeepers complained of the neglect shown to our roads the last time they paid it, and now that the winter has set in, accidents will be of frequent occurrence, and it will be only luck if life will not be now and then be sacrificed to bad roads.
